The suppression list is a special type of subscriber list. There is only one per account, and it contains email addresses you don't want to send marketing email to - perfect for those who have unsubscribed in the past (i.e. via Mailchimp).

To access the suppression list, go to Send Email > Lists & Subscribers > Suppressions

What is it for

The suppression list is all about maintaining your reputation as an emailer. If you get a bad rep in email world, your emails are more likely to end up in spam filters. So it's very important to protect it.

We do this automatically for you, but there's cases where you might need to manually add emails to your suppression list.

When you'd use it

  1. To import unsubscribes from another email system you've used, such as Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, CliniqApps etc.

  2. To add email addresses of people you don't want to ever accidentally add to your Custom Lists via an import.

  3. To take a look at your unsubscribes, permanently bounced email addresses or spam-reporters.

✨ Email addresses on the suppression list can't be accidentally imported or added to your regular subscriber lists. This ensures they will never accidentally be emailed. This means you can have peace of mind knowing that people won't be receiving emails from you that they don't want.

How it works

There are two ways an email can end up in the suppression list:

  1. They are automatically added by Peptalkr

  2. They are manually uploaded by you

Below, we'll explain each of these scenarios and why it's so important

Automatically added email addresses

A subscriber's email address is automatically added to the suppression list if:

  • The address hard bounces (the email address does not exist)

  • The subscriber marks one of your emails as spam

  • The subscriber unsubscribes or you set their status to unsubscribed

  • It was part of a bulk remove operation, with the "Unsubscribe from all lists" option selected

When viewing the suppression list, the reasons for the above items will be shown as either "Bounced", "Marked as Spam" or "Unsubscribed".

Manually added email addresses

To manually add emails to the suppression list:

  1. Click Lists & subscribers

  2. Click Suppressions on the left menu.

You will then see the suppression list, and the reason each email was added to the list. If they were added automatically, the reason will be "Unsubscribed", "Marked as Spam" or "Bounced". If you see "Suppressed", it means the email address was added manually.

To export the suppression list, in CSV or tab-delimited format, select Export list, above the table.

To import emails to the suppression list, follow this tutorial.

Added emails

Adding an email address to the 'Suppression' list will ensure they are never synced into the Cliniko patient marketing list therefore will not receive marketing emails.

Email addresses added in this way will have the reason "Suppressed".

To manually add email addresses to the suppression list, click Add to suppression list on the top right side of the page, then follow the instructions.

Removed emails

Removing an email of a Patient from the 'Suppression' list will automatically sync them back into the Patients list and they will start receiving marketing emails from you going forward.

To remove email addresses from the suppression list, select the checkbox to the right of the email addresses you want to remove, then click Remove from suppression list.
