When you're sprucing up your emails with images, especially those taken on smartphones or tablets, you might sometimes find they appear sideways after being uploaded. This quirk is mostly seen with photos taken on devices like iPhones. Here's the simple reason why this happens and how you can fix it for your Peptalkr email campaigns.
Why do images appear sideways?
The root of this issue lies in something called EXIF Metadata. This is a set of data embedded in the image file itself, detailing everything from where the photo was taken to the camera used. Part of this data includes the orientation of the camera when the photo was snapped. While the image may look just right on your device or computer, email services like Gmail might read this EXIF data differently, displaying the image based on its original orientation โ which can mean sideways or upside down images in your emails.
How to fix sideways images on Windows:
On Windows: Using Windows File Explorer. This built-in method in Windows allows for easy EXIF data removal:
Press
Windows key + E
to open File Explorer.Find and right-click on the image, then select Properties.
Go to the Details tab. Here, you'll find sections for "Camera" and "Advanced photo," detailing various technical aspects.
At the bottom, click on Remove Properties and Personal Information. This opens a tool offering two options: to create a copy with all possible metadata removed or to selectively remove certain properties.
Select your preferred option and proceed to remove the metadata - ensuring you are removing the 'Orientation' metadata.
Now you can re-upload the image into Peptalkr and it will have the correct orientation.
How to fix sideways images on Mac:
On OSX (Mac): Using Preview. This built-in method in Mac allows for easy EXIF data removal:
In Peptalkr, open the email template where you have uploaded the image and it appears sideways. Right click the image and press 'Open Image in New Tab
โIn the new tab - right click the image and press 'Save image as' then save the file to your desktop.
Double click the file to open it in 'Preview' (or - right click and press 'Open with Preview' if it isn't set as your default image viewer)
Use the rotate button at the top of the Preview window to rotate the image to the correct orientation and then press File > Save.
Now you can re-upload the image into Peptalkr and it will have the correct orientation.
